Start a Sex-Positive Newsletter for Your City!

We started Boston's Sex-Positive Newsletter as a way to make it easier for people in the Boston area to get involved with local sex-positive community, initiatives, and resources. The newsletter increases the visibility of the sexual justice movement (which is heartening!), and helps people to connect to other locals who share their sex-positive values.

We would love to see other cities offer something similar. If you want to create a sex-positive newsletter for your city, we want to help you!

Here are some tips to get you started.

Search Terms

Start by searching on Google and Facebook Groups (select the "groups" tab under the Facebook search).

Search for [Your city] + ...

  • Sex-positive
  • Pro-choice
  • Sex education
  • Feminist
  • LGBT
  • Queer
  • Poly / Polyamorous / Polyamory
  • Kinky / BDSM
  • Sexual assault
  • Consent
  • Abortion
  • Reproductive rights
  • Family planning
  • SRHR (Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights)

Finding Events

Look for events on these websites:

  • Facebook
  • Fetlife
  • Meetup
  • Eventbrite

Use the search options to choose the date range and location you're looking for.

Finding Sex-Positive Connections

Search on Google to see if your city has any of the following organizations and groups.

  • A university with a gender/sexuality studies program/department
  • A rape crisis center
  • A pride/LGBTQ center
  • A pride parade
  • A conference related to any of the search terms above

When you find a relevant organization:

  1. See if they have any upcoming events, job openings, or resources that you can include in your newsletter.
  2. Also, consider emailing or messaging the organizers to ask for their help. They will likely be excited about what you're doing! (See example email below.)

Example email:

Hi,
I'm starting an email newsletter that will help connect people in the area to local sexuality-related events and resources. Do you know of any local events, organizations, or initiatives that I should include? I'm looking for anything related to sexual rights, reproductive justice, abortion access, alternative sexualities (LGBTQ, BDSM, non-monogamy, etc.), consent, support for sexual assault survivors, or gender equality.
Thanks!

Organizations That Might Be Active Near You

These are great organizations to reach out to for suggestions (see the example email above). Also, they might have job openings that you could include in the newsletter.

  • Planned Parenthood
  • IYAFP (International Youth Alliance for Family Planning) - Reach out to their country coordinator for your country (this is best if you live in a smaller country).
  • Your local rape crisis center
  • Your local pride center or LGBTQ+ health center
  • Local sex stores
