Lead a Sex Positive Boston Discussion!

Are you interested in facilitating a conversation about a sexuality-related topic? Maybe you would be a good person to co-lead a Sex Positive Boston discussion!

Our discussions are richer when they're shaped by different people with different perspectives. Having a diverse group of facilitators is our goal. We would love to have facilitators of various races, socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, disability statuses, immigration statuses, etc. Also, having anyone other than Nicole facilitate is one step toward diversifying, even if you fall into the straight/white/cisgender type category.

How it Works

You will be planning and co-facilitating the discussion alongside one of our facilitators (usually Nicole).

Requirements

In order to lead a Sex Positive Boston discussion, you must attend at least 1-2 Sex Positive Boston discussions.

What's Expected of You

  1. Come up with the discussion topic (on your own, or in a brainstorming session with you co-facilitator).

  2. Meet (in person, or by phone/video chat) with your co-facilitator to come up with an outline of discussion questions and (sometimes) activities.

  3. Let the planned (or mostly planned) discussion outline marinate in your brain for a while. Then check in with your co-facilitator to see if either of you has any additions or tweaks to make. Now the discussion outline is complete!

  4. Show up to the discussion 15 minutes early. Check in with your co-facilitator and say hi.

  5. Co-facilitate the discussion! This means:
  • Optional: Introduce the topic.
  • Ask some of the discussion questions (we'll usually decide in advance which ones each person will ask/explain).
  • Optional: Chime in when someone is going off topic, says something confusing or potentially offensive, etc. If you prefer not to do these things, your co-facilitator can take charge of this part.

Discussion Values

This discussion group is based on the belief that the people who show up have a lot to contribute. Trying to teach people things or push them toward certain beliefs is not really our style. As a Sex Positive Boston facilitator, you should be genuinely interested in what the people who show up have to say. They might have some interesting perspectives that you or I haven't thought much about!

At the same time, we do have strongly held values about thinking critically about sex and social justice. We're not here just to talk about sex without a thoughtful lens.

You don't necessarily need to identify as a "sexpert," but you should have experience reflecting (even just in your own head) on questions about how sexuality is portrayed in our society, and ways of thinking about sex that might be more constructive. And you should have experience doing similar reflections on other social justice topics, like race, poverty, class, gender, etc.

Apply!

Applying to facilitate a discussion does not necessarily mean you will be chosen to do so. But don't be discouraged!!
