Today, we lost musician Sinéad O’Connor, who is known for her hit song, Nothing Compares 2 U. O'Connor caused public outrage for speaking out against rampant sexual abuse in the Catholic church in the 90s. In 1992, O'Connor went on SNL and tore up a picture of the pope as a protest against sexual abuse of children in the Catholic church. This abuse was perpetrated by hundreds of church officials, and covered up on an institutional level.
Despite the negative impact the protest had on her career, O'Connor refused to apologize. She should have gotten support, but instead she was ridiculed. "It was very traumatizing,” O'Connor reflected, “it was open season on treating me like a crazy bitch.” She struggled with mental health issues throughout her life.* Despite the trauma of the experience, O'Connor said that falling from the spotlight of fame allowed her to focus on her music. “I’m not a pop star. I’m just a troubled soul who needs to scream into mikes now and then.” She was 56. Thank you, Sinéad, for standing up against abuse. Rest in power. *which Miley Cyrus publicly mocked her for, by the way. Comments are closed.
